How Long Does Skyr Last After Opening?

Skyr typically lasts for 3-5 days in the fridge after opening. Storing your skyr properly is very important for your safety and health, as well as for maintaining its delicious fresh taste.

Here, we’re answering your questions on storing skyr, including ‘how long does skyr yoghurt last?’, ‘how long can skyr be out of the fridge?’ and ‘does skyr go bad?’ We’ll also cover how Danone Skyr’s commitment to quality and packaging helps keep your yoghurt fresh without costing too much.

How to store skyr properly

From how long skyr lasts in the fridge to our commitment to quality and safety, let’s explore the best and safest way to store your skyr.

How long does skyr yoghurt last in the fridge?

Keep your skyr refrigerated between +1˚C and +6˚C max. and use it within 3-5 days of opening. If possible, store skyr in the fridge rather than in the door, where temperatures can fluctuate.

With larger pots of skyr (e.g. Danone Plain Skyr 450g and 800g), remember to close the lid properly between uses and use a clean spoon each time - this will help keep it fresher for longer.

How long can skyr be out of the fridge?

While it’s best to keep skyr refrigerated as much as possible, Danone Skyr drinks are great for enjoying on the go. That being said, we don’t recommend leaving them out of the fridge for any longer than 4 hours before consuming or throwing  away.

Danone’s commitment to quality and safety

Here at Danone, we’re committed to high-quality, sustainable pots* and excellent food safety standards to deliver the best possible skyr yoghurts for you to enjoy. Our rigorous quality control and innovative approach to sustainable pots help ensure you get a fresh, creamy yoghurt in every spoonful.

* Pot can be rinsed and recycled. Lid cannot be recycled.

Does skyr go bad?

Yes, skyr can go bad if it’s not stored properly or if it’s left open for too long. (Although one of the reasons skyr has been a staple in Icelandic cuisine since the Vikings is because of its long shelf-life!).

Our approach to quality control, safety, and sustainability aims to keep your skyr products fresh for as long as possible whilst minimising unnecessary waste.

How long is skyr good for after its expiration date?

To help prevent waste, Danone Skyr products feature a ‘best before’ date rather than a ‘use by’ date. We’d always encourage you to trust your senses here – look at, smell and taste your yoghurt before throwing it away after its ‘best before’ date has passed. That way, you won’t miss a single delicious spoonful.

Signs skyr has gone bad

Some tell-tale signs that your skyr has gone bad include:

  • A change in smell - if it smells anything other than its usual mild and tangy self, this could mean it’s time for a new pot.
  • It tastes different - try just a small amount. If it doesn’t taste like it should, throw it away and buy fresh.
  • The texture has changed - is there a separate liquid layer on the yogurt? Is it coarser? If you notice any changes in the texture at all, it could mean it’s gone bad.
  • Mould - if there’s visible mould, throw the skyr away as this is a sign that it’s gone bad.

If you notice any of these, or you’re not sure whether your skyr is still safe to eat, remember ‘if in doubt, throw it out’.

Can I freeze skyr?

Yes, you can freeze skyr to enjoy at a later date and to prevent waste. It’s worth noting that, as with many other foods, freezing and thawing skyr can affect its texture and taste.

You can enjoy skyr yoghurt frozen as ‘fro-yo’,or thaw it before eating. We recommend thawing skyr in the fridge overnight for the best results
